So much can happen in a year. It doesn’t seem like that long ago that I was by myself on my own adventures. But since meeting this special group, my perspective of my ambitions and relationships has changed. It’s nice to take a moment to remember what brought us here as I watch Veris clean the troll goo off Roadbock’s fur coats (that’s right…plural…more then one).
This adventure started after a 6 month break from life-threatening adventuring. I spent my time praying to Helm for an animal companion with an affinity for killing spiders. (May my sister soon face the light!). I was caught off guard to find a large wasp, but pleasantly surprised to learn it is a natural spider killer. Helm blessed this particular wasp with a stinger that can heal as well as paralyze spiders. I am happy with my strange new companion. I was starting to get worried because I kept getting visions of a whistling pig. Helm has a strange sense of humor.
Varis spent his time wisely by studying under a powerful magic user. Roadblock used his free time filling up a bar tab and guarding the tower Varis studied in. I didn’t see much of Lyric or Rose as they spent most of their time in wilder areas. I heard Rose was working to help save an endangered plant. I’m not sure how Dradar spent his time. He probably was concocting some new deadly poison. I saw him slinking around town every now and again.
What’s more exciting is we have met a couple new adventuring companions: an Eldritch Knight called Inkas, and a very…unique….dementia caster called Setko. Both make the locals a bit nervous, but so do I!
Our current adventure started when a young man by the name of Eldrin Han gave us a message that Sir Isteval was interested in seeing us again. We set out quickly knowing that Istival would only seek our help if he was really in need. Little did we know that Eldrin was not everything he seemed. Isteval was surprised to see us and even more surprised to find out that Eldrin was the one who sent us. He told us that Eldrin was dead due to an encounter with a Rakshasa. The news confirmed Isteval’s suspicions and his next step: Dragonspire Castle. Apparently, there is a dangerous portal underneath that could wreak havoc on our world if we do not dealt with it. Isteval has joined us this time so he can personally oversee the expedition.
Lady Morwen and her brother, Duke Maldwyn, saw us off and very generously offered to cover our expenses at The Way Inn. Our travels were uneventful to the Inn, but things got a bit interesting as we settled in. We had received a tip that a man named Darin Dargweth, a cleric of Tempest, had shown a bit too much interest in Dragonspire. We spent our time seeing if he had been around the Way Inn. A group of freeloading (and suspicious) dwarves said they knew Darin. Wanting to get the truth, I secretly cast a spell to loosen their tongues. A sudden burst from the fireplace caught me off guard and I found myself telling some dark secrets. Unable to control myself, I ran upstairs embarrassed. Meanwhile our new companions played a game of cards with the dwarves. As I understand, they did quite well. I can’t imagine how much cheating happened at that table, but I am glad no one was hurt.
Today’s travels were quite, but tonight was a bit of a disaster. I had always heard of Trolls, but I have never faced them in battle. We had settled down for the night and Lyric was on watch. A small halfling outcry had us up and running. When I arrived on the scene, Lyric was already badly injured and unconscious. Luckily Rose was able to drag him to me in her tiger form while the trolls were distracted by a large creature I have never seen before. It was a grotesque washing station with a large humanoid arm and fist. I’m not sure I want to know where Setko encountered such a beast. Thankfully, at the moment, it was under control and doing good work keeping the Troll’s attention. As soon as I healed Lyric, he disappeared again into the woods. Rose in true tiger form jumped on the back of a Troll burying her teeth and claws into it’s rubbery flesh. Our new friend the knight did some damage with a fire orb and I followed suit with rays of fire. It seemed the trolls healing power was stunted by the fire, so I was going to drop a fireball when suddenly Varis and Roadblock crashed in on horses. Roadblock jumped from his horse and in a fury of steal dropped one of the trolls. Varis put oil under the Trolls in front of Inkas (classic Veris) and a fire pot was thrown out of the woods and ignited the oil. As the trolls responded we saw more appear from the deeper part of the woods. Varis, thinking clearly as always, covered us in invisibility and we were able to sneak back to camp. I thought it was curious that Dradar had missed the battle, but when I inquired of his whereabouts, Varis informed me that he found a large spider in his bedding and sought some higher ground so he could sleep in peace.
Now we settle down again hoping for a peaceful, trolless/spiderless night to get the rest we need to face the menace of Dragonspire Castle.
